Is a door with glass a good solution
Back to guideIs a door with glass a good solution? Advantages and disadvantages.
Among the many different variants of entrance and interior doors that we can choose for a house or apartment, glazed door leaves always attract attention. Their interesting appearance and a variety of forms, sizes and shapes of glazing can be an attribute that makes many people opt for this type of solution. It is a very good idea if the room to which these doors lead has no windows or they are of small size and let in little daylight. So, is it worth considering a door with glass instead of standard solid sashes, and will it work as their alternative in any case?
What are the advantages of using doors with glass in houses and apartments?
The primary role of glazing, of course, is to brighten up the apartment and rooms by allowing daylight to penetrate freely. The same is true for the use of mirrors to optically enlarge and illuminate gloomy interiors. Thanks to these treatments, especially entrance corridors, hallways and vestibules change their character, where it is not necessary to use artificial light sources during the day. Sometimes this is necessary when all the doors to individual rooms are closed, and a windowless corridor is filled with darkness.
Glazing is also decorative and can be an interesting addition to the overall interior design, referring to the chosen style of finishing the apartment. It’s not just a matter of choosing between transparent, frosted or tinted glass, as contemporary ideas offer a much wider range of possibilities. Here, interior designers have a lot of room for manoeuvre, and in apartments it is possible to use both doors with delicate glazing in the form of small windows, with a glazed larger area divided by muntins, as well as door leaves that are a single sheet of tempered glass, set in an elegant frame.
Is a glass door safe and what types of glass are best to choose?
Many people may have doubts about whether the security of a door with glass stands up to the high level, whether the glazing used will be durable, strong and resistant to years of use, and how it will behave in case of breakage. Fortunately, the glass production technologies used today, as well as the installation techniques, make both doors with glass and all-glass sashes very safe even in unforeseen circumstances.
A durable solution is multi-layer bonded or laminated glass, where the glass sheets are permanently bonded to each other with resin or film, which does not adversely affect the transparency. The advantage of laminated glass doors is better acoustic and thermal insulation properties. Toughened glass is also widely used, which, when subjected to thermal treatment at high temperatures, gains much greater resistance to cracking or chipping. Tempered glass is used for door glazing, which is glued on a special reinforcing film. Its breakage requires considerable force, while if an accident occurs and the glass breaks, such glass shatters into small pieces that are not sharp. Tempered or laminated glass, as well as a common combination of the two techniques, are a guarantee that homeowners are not at risk of any serious injury in the unfortunate event of a broken door glass accident.
What are the decorative and functional possibilities of doors with glass elements?
Filled with natural light, the room looks much better, seems more spacious and cozy, which is conducive to creating a pleasant, homely atmosphere. This basic function is combined with decorative value, because the glazing used usually has its own remarkable and original character. They can use, for example, extra-white glass (optiwhite), which transmits light better than others and perfectly affects the interior design, frosted glass, which promotes a sense of discretion and intimacy, as well as colored glass, which further diversifies the play of light entering the room.
Sandblasted glassware with patterns is also interesting, which can look great in combination with glamour style or Victorian splendor in the interior. Ornaments, inlays and appliqués on the glass look striking and are certainly a detail that any of our guests will pay attention to. If we are anxious to control what is happening on the other side of the door, we can opt for a model with a transparent glass, which allows, for example, to look into the children’s room and check whether our baby has fallen asleep. On the one hand, the child is assured of peace and quiet, on the other hand, the parent is not deprived of insight into what is happening behind the closed door.
What are the disadvantages of doors with glass and how to deal with them?
Glass doors do not work everywhere, for example, if they are to separate spaces where intimacy is desired, such as a bathroom or bedroom. The penetration of light from the corridor or another room can make it difficult for some sensitive people to fall asleep in the evening, and you also have to take into account worse noise attenuation than with solid door leaves. Thus, the aesthetic advantages of doors with glass are, in this case, worth further consideration.
For advocates of tidiness, it can be a nuisance to keep a door with glass perfectly clean, and it can be assumed that the imprints of children’s hands will require frequent wiping of the glass. This type of dirt is less visible on frosted glass with a milky finish than on, smooth glass, so this solution may make the issue a little easier, but of course does not solve the problem completely.
Does a door with glass fit into any interior style?
Types of glazing and ways to incorporate them into the door leaf are so varied that there are basically no restrictions when it comes to choosing a model that will harmonize with the style of the interior. From classic, small rectangular windows to large glazing interspersed with elegant frames – you can choose the perfect variant for apartments arranged in minimalist or loft style, as well as rustic, boho or retro.
Unusual and bold arrangements make bold use of industrial or industrial-style glass doors, such as those with a sunken reinforcing mesh or glass hidden behind a grille. The raw, utilitarian character has many supporters who like such solutions very much, and they are certainly an original way to spice up the interior.
