How to take care of glazed doors? Practical tips
Back to guideHow to take care of glazed doors? Practical tips
Cleaning of exterior glass doors should be done regularly to maintain their aesthetics and functionality. It not only improves the appearance, but also extends the life of the front door and ensures its smooth operation for many years. Both steel and aluminum doors can be exposed to various environmental contaminants, settling dust from the streets or industrial dust. How to take care of exterior glazed doors and what preparations should be used? Welcome to our guide.
How often should exterior glass doors be cleaned?
Systematic washing and the use of appropriate protective measures will more than pay off. Care and cleaning of glass doors is an activity that takes literally a few moments, and is very important for the entrance leaf. You can perform a general door cleaning every month or two, especially in locations where there is a significant amount of pollution in the air – for example, near a busy road or in a city. More thorough cleaning of glass and frames can be done seasonally, that is, every 3-4 months. This is recommended especially after periods of heavy rain, snow or after strong winds, and will help prevent dirt buildup, which can be more difficult to remove after a longer period of time. When cleaning, always pay special attention to corners and seals, which can accumulate dirt.
How to protect glazed doors from scratches and damage?
Glazed entrance doors are increasingly offering options for laminated or tempered glass for added protection against damage. Unfortunately, most of them, such as deep scratches or indelible streaks, are caused accidentally or by too much treatment with cleaning products. Using soft microfiber cloths and mild cleaners, such as the aforementioned ammonia-free glazing liquids, will prevent such micro-damage, which can deteriorate the appearance of the entire glazing over time. Applying a special protective film to the glass is one of the easiest ways to protect the glass from scratches and cracks. These films are transparent, so they do not affect the aesthetics of the door, and in addition they can strengthen the glass and protect it from shattering. If you want to further protect the entire door from mechanical damage, make sure that there are no sharp objects around it. Rapid opening of the door leaf, caused, for example, by a gust of wind, can lead to its meeting with the edge of the wall, so it is also worth thinking about the use of opening stops.
Is it worth it to use waterproofing for glazed doors?
Maintenance of glass doors, which brings long-lasting cleanliness, is easier with the use of preparations that impregnate glass surfaces. These are specialized agents that form a protective coating on the surface of the glass, increasing resistance to dirt and weathering. Some products are available in spray form, while others require application with a cloth or brush, but their application is basically effortless and you can do it yourself. The action of impregnants is to create an invisible coating that repels water (hydrophobic impregnants) and greasy dirt (oleophobic impregnants). The resulting layer is transparent, but hinders the deposition of dust, dirt and atmospheric contaminants, keeping the glass in the door clean for a longer period of time. It will be a good idea to use waterproofing products based on nanotechnology, which use microparticles in their action. Good quality impregnants do not affect the transparency or color of the glass in any way. Although they do not prevent deep mechanical damage, they can reduce the risk of minor scratches and abrasions, hence they are a very good addition to the regular care of glazed exterior doors.
What are the best ways to maintain glazed door frames?
When cleaning the glass in the door, do not forget about the decorative frame, which is usually made of inox steel. It is a corrosion- and damage-resistant material, but also requires regular care to maintain its properties. To remove stains or fingerprints, simply apply a mild cleaning agent in the form of a soapy water solution or use a paste of baking soda and water. Absolutely avoid aggressive chemicals such as bleach or acids, which can damage the surface of stainless steel irreparably. After cleaning, you can apply a special oil for inox steel or nano impregnate, which will reduce fingerprints and smudges. Stainless steel is prone to this type of staining, which can be quite inconvenient in daily use. The oil removes dull stains and restores the natural luster of the steel surface. It also forms a thin protective coating that reduces dirt adhesion and makes subsequent cleaning easier. Regular use can also reduce the risk of minor scratches on the surface of the inox steel decorative frame, although this is not its main function. Use a soft cloth to apply the oil to distribute it well over the entire surface of the frame and give it an even shine. Make movements in line with the direction of the polishing line and do not use too much oil – a thin but properly applied protective layer is enough.
