How to measure a door properly?

Back to guide

To buy a door, we need to know what size sash and frame will fit our needs. It is not enough to know the height and width of the leaf. What dimensions of the door are needed to choose the right product? These are the most important designations and dimensions used by manufacturers of exterior doors.

Signs that determine the dimensions of the door

The doors in our offer are marked with abbreviations. From the perspective of a person browsing the catalog, they may seem enigmatic, so we explain their meaning. First we will deal with the height. We distinguish four most important parameters. Ho [mm] is the height of the door frame measured in the light of the mounting hole. Hp [mm] is the clear height of the frame, Hc [mm] is the overall height of the frame, and Hw [mm] is the height of the sash in the rebate. The width data begins with the letter S. Similarly, So [mm] is the width of the frame measured in the light of the mounting hole, Sp [mm] the width in the light of the frame, Sc [mm] determines the overall width of the frame, and Sw [mm] – the width of the sash in the rebate.

What should be checked before measuring a door?

Exterior doors differ from one another. Some of them open internally and some externally. This is worth taking into account. An equally important issue is the side of opening the sash. We distinguish between left and right sash, depending on the location of the hinges. Doors can have an adjustable frame or an unadjustable frame. The adjustable frame is most often found in sliding and folding doors, so it is irrelevant when measuring exterior doors.

Measuring the door

To measure, prepare the necessary tools, namely a tape measure or measuring tape and a level. First of all, it is advisable to measure the thickness of the door. The classic thickness of an exterior door is 68-78 mm. This is the optimal thickness, but for energy-efficient doors it should be greater. The most popular doors in the StalProdukt Zamosc range are 101 mm in thickness, thus guaranteeing excellent heat and acoustic insulation.

We start measuring the width of the door from edge to edge of the door halfway up. Later we measure the height of the door leaf, from the threshold to its top edge. If we want to replace the leaf, the new investment must match the dimensions of the door frame, also necessary to measure. We check the height and width of the door frame in the light of the installation opening (that is, from the bottom edge of the door frame to the upper end of the opening). Here it is useful to use a level, which will indicate whether the surface of the frame is even.
