Right-hand door or left-hand door – how to distinguish between them?
Back to guideThe door should provide easy and convenient access to the room. This is important not only for comfort, but also for the safety of the occupants of the house. Before buying a door, consider what type of opening will work best in a given space. We distinguish between right-hand and left-hand doors, as well as inward and outward opening doors. The right configuration will allow us to plan the space of the house well and increase the efficiency of our rooms.
Right or left door – how to determine the type of door?
The choice of a right or left-hand door is, despite appearances, very important. Buying an exterior door that opens the wrong way can create problems that prevent the correct use of the door or upset the balance of the room space. Furniture blocking the opening of the door, uncomfortable movement in the room – these are just two examples of situations that should be avoided by a thoughtful purchase.
How do I determine if the door is right or left?
A right-hand exterior door or right-hand interior door has its hinges located on the right side (looking at the door from the side to which it opens). This means that this door opens to the left, that is, its outer edge is on the left side and the inner edge is on the right side. The left-hand door, on the other hand, has its hinges located on the left side (looking at the door from the side to which it opens). This means that this door opens to the right, that is, its outer edge is on the right side, and the inner edge is on the left side.
The choice should be determined by the layout of the room and its layout plan.
Doors opening inward or outward – what does it depend on?
By default, exterior doors are opened outward, and interior doors are opened inward. Of course, exceptions confirm the rule, and the final decision on how to open the door is up to us. It is worth considering the advantages of both ways of opening the door and choose the most convenient option.
The main use of an exterior door is to protect the home from break-ins. It is the opening of the door to the outside that increases security, because it makes it difficult for strangers to enter a room or house. It also makes it easier for emergency services that need to enter the house in exceptional situations.
In contrast, interior doors usually open inward into the room in order to reduce blocking of the passage, for example, in the hallway. The situation should change when the room itself is small and the door could significantly affect its use. Then a much better option would be to install doors that open outward.
